The Digital Lumbar Spine X-ray with Functional Tests is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize the structures of the lumbar spine and assess its mobility. This method is frequently employed to diagnose various spinal conditions and injuries, such as osteochondrosis, herniated discs, spondylolisthesis, and other pathologies.

Projections:

  • Anteroposterior View: Evaluates the condition of the vertebral bodies, intervertebral foramina, and articular processes.
  • Lateral View: Assesses the height of the intervertebral discs, the presence of osteophytes, and the degree of foraminal narrowing.
  • Oblique Views: Provides a detailed evaluation of the articular processes and intervertebral foramina.

Indications: The X-ray with functional tests may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Back Pain: To determine the cause of pain, such as degenerative changes, herniated discs, spondylolisthesis, or other conditions.
  • Spinal Injuries: To evaluate the extent of damage from fractures or dislocations and plan appropriate treatment.
  • Suspected Congenital Anomalies: To identify congenital spinal conditions like spina bifida or kyphoscoliosis.
  • Post-Surgical Monitoring: To assess the results of spinal surgeries and track recovery progress.
  • Tumor Detection: To help in the identification of tumors or other growths in the spinal area.

Preparation: No special preparation is usually required, but it is recommended to:

  • Remove Metal Objects: Such as jewelry or glasses to avoid artifacts on the images.
  • Inform About Pregnancy: Female patients should notify the technician if they are pregnant.
  • Disclose Recent Surgeries or Injuries: Inform the technician about any recent surgeries or injuries in the area of interest.
  • Follow Instructions: Adhere to any positioning and breathing instructions provided by the medical staff.

Procedure:

During the examination, the patient will assume different body positions (sitting, standing, forward and backward bending) while X-rays are taken in four projections: anteroposterior, lateral, and oblique views. This approach allows for a comprehensive assessment of spinal mobility and helps identify any potential disorders or pathological changes.

  • Positioning: The patient lies on the X-ray table in various positions (prone, supine, or lateral).
  • Imaging: The radiologist performs a series of X-ray images in different projections, including functional tests such as bending or twisting.
  • Duration: The procedure is painless and typically takes about 15-20 minutes.
