Carotid artery CT angiography is a non-invasive imaging technique used to obtain detailed images of the carotid arteries in the neck. This procedure involves the intravenous administration of a contrast agent, which enhances the visibility of the blood vessels on the CT scans. The method enables the detection of conditions such as narrowing (stenosis), blockages (occlusions), and aneurysms in the carotid arteries, which can impact blood flow to the brain and increase the risk of stroke.

Procedure: During the CT angiography, the patient lies on a table that moves through the CT scanner. A contrast medium is injected into a vein, allowing for clear visualization of the carotid arteries. Multiple cross-sectional images are then taken and processed to create detailed 3D images of the arteries.

Indications:

  • Assessing the degree of stenosis in patients at risk of stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).
  • Detecting aneurysms or dissection of the carotid arteries.
  • Planning for surgical interventions such as carotid endarterectomy.
  • Monitoring the condition after surgical or endovascular treatment of carotid artery diseases.
  • Evaluating cerebral blood flow in patients with suspected vascular diseases.

Preparation:

  • Provide information about current illnesses, allergies, and medications.
  • Avoid food and drinks, especially caffeine or alcohol, 4-6 hours before the procedure.
  • Consult a doctor if you have kidney issues or allergies to contrast agents.
  • Remove any metal objects or jewelry before the procedure.
